Marc Chagall Paintings
Marc Chagall (1887 – 1985) was a Russian-French artist.

Chagall was considered as pioneer of modern art and one of its greatest figurative painters who invented a visual language that recorded the thrill and terror of the 20th century. For decades, he has been respected as the world's preeminent Jewish artist.

"When Matisse dies," Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, "Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is". View Artist Collection

About Apocalypse in Lilac, Capriccio (Apocalypse en Lilas, Capriccio) Marc Chagall
This painting was the first work that Chagall produced after coming out of mourning for Bella, who had died suddenly in September 1944 after almost 30 years of marriage. It was created in response to seeing the horrors of the concentration camps revealed through newspapers and Pathé newsreels. His pencil titles in Cyrillic (upper right) translate as “Apocalypse” and “Capriccio” (fantasy), and his biographer Jackie Wullschläger has described it as “the bleakest of Chagall’s many crucifixions”: combining symbolism with realism and incorporating factual information about the Holocaust for the first time.
