M. V. Dhurandhar

The idea of a retrospective on well-known artist M. V. Dhurandhar was first mooted in the sesquicentennial year of his birth (1867). The artist, who died in 1944, was hugely successful in his lifetime and his works covered all known genres of realistic art.

Portraits, landscapes, episodes from history and mythology, as well as mappings of social life, rendered by way of oil paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketches, and commercially popular as posters, postcards, book covers and illustrations, as well as oleographs.

A master of anatomical studies, he remained unmoved in the face of experimentation, refusing to budge from the practice he had trained in, and which he considered the purest form of art making.

About A Pathare Prabhu Wedding Ceremony M V Dhurandhar Indian Masters Art Painting
The current painting presents an elaborate genre scene that depicts a wedding puja from the Pathare Prabhu community, part of the Kshatriya caste, that lived in Mumbai (then Bombay). The male members in the painting are instantly recognisable through the unique headgear they wear. The complex scene reveals the artist's mastery over crowd scenes. Seated in the centre of the composition, garlanded with flowers, are the nervous bride and groom, surrounded by friends and relatives. In the foreground, the priest officiates the proceedings instructing the bride's parents, who prepare offerings for the puja. Along the back, rows of women dressed in their finery watch the ceremony, their expressions and knowing glances communicating a mixture of emotions and responses. To the left of the composition, two men gesticulate to each other, commenting on the proceedings in an animated manner; other guests smile and gaze upon the young couple with a range of expressions, creating a delightfully dynamic scene.
