"The New Church And Old Houses In The Hague" by Vincent Van Gogh is a popular painting depicting a cluster of houses with a church in between .


This old protestant church must have had a special meaning for Van Gogh. Vincent was after all the son of a preacher and was a believer himself. He doubtless attended services in this church during his stay in The Hague so it wasn’t just a coincidence that he chose to paint it, it was symbolic of his father’s world. The combination of God’s house as a subject with the dwellings of humble people in front of it, was an expression of his social conscience in relation to his father’s faith.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks but received little recognition during his lifetime. Van Gogh was unsuccessful during his lifetime and was considered a madman and a failure. He became famous after his suicide, and exists in the public imagination as the quintessential misunderstood and tortured genius artist.
