The man on the brown horse near the center and the figure on the right walking towards the viewer both reinforce the feeling that the painting was executed on the spot.

'Persian Cafe — The Pottery Seller' depicts an open, crowded café full of men seated in wide benches adjacent to the outside wall of a bazaar with a blue-tiled mosque dome and minaret in the background.Most obvious is the array of white plates and crockery strewn one by one outside the café on the ground. Edwin Lord Weeks is one of the most celebrated of the American Orientalists. Most of his paintings render empathy and belonging than a patronising or condescending portrayal. Weeks who travelled and painted in Mathura, Benaras, Agra, Delhi, Amritsar and Bombay shows a mastery of artistic detail: most of his paintings bring together an amalgam of society, replete with men, women, animals, structures and dust; the royalty is incidental. A busy marketplace or a solitary mosque. Original Weeks' paintings today command prices in excess of a million dollars at auctions.
