Dattatreya, or the Universal Guru, is Trimurti or the three- headed incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. In the current painting, Dattatreya is shown holding a combination of all their attributes, and is surrounded by the omnipresent cow and his four dogs. The wish-fulfilling cow, or Kamadhenu, represents Mother Earth and Dharma, whilst each of the dogs stand for one of the Vedas, the external storehouses of Spiritual Wisdom. In his multiple hands, he holds the trident, the Sudarshan chakra, the conch, a lotus flower, the bhasma or ashes and the begging bowl, each of which serve as symbols of the lives each of the three Supreme Beings have endured.

 

Ravi Varma shows Dattatreya as an ascetic, replete with a peaceful, glowing countenance. He wears a traditional dhoti, simple chappals and rosary beads strung around his neck. Smeared ash is visible on his multiple arms, each of which holds an identifiable attribute associated with the deity.
