"The Torment of Saint Anthony", the earliest known painting by Michelangelo, shows the common medieval subject, included in the Golden Legend and other sources, of Saint Anthony being assailed in the desert by demons, whose temptations he resisted.

This composition shows a later episode where St Anthony, normally flown about the desert supported by angels, was ambushed in mid-air by devils. Anthony is on a rocky area half way in the air surrounded by several demons that all have grimacing looks on their faces. Below the jagged rocks is a large body of water with mountains that are far away in the background. "The Torment of Saint Anthony" was bought at a Sotheby's auction in July 2008 by an American art dealer for US$2 million.

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet of the High Renaissance born in the Republic of Florence, who exerted an unparalleled influence on the development of Western art.   Considered the greatest living artist during his lifetime, he has since been described as one of the greatest artists of all time. A number of his works in painting, sculpture, and architecture rank among the most famous in existence. Often called Il Divino ("the divine one"), his contemporaries often admired his terribilità—his ability to install a sense of awe. Attempts by subsequent artists to imitate Michelangelo's impassioned, highly personal style resulted in Mannerism, the next major movement in Western art after the High Renaissance.
