About Portrait of a Young Woman
"Portrait of a Young Woman", one of the largest 15th century female portraits by the Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli, is an idealised portrait of Simonetta Vespucci – a young noblewoman who was married at the age of sixteen – in the role of a nymph. There is great beauty in the painting ranging from the ornate hair clip to the elaborate hairstyle. This painting ranks high in the long line of successful portraits by Sandro Botticelli. She was considered the most beautiful woman in Florence and became the – supposedly platonic – ladylove of Giuliano de’ Medici. The medallion she wore around her neck is a copy in reverse of "Nero's Seal", a famous antique carnelian representing Apollo and Marsyas, which belonged to Lorenzo de' Medici. The plain background suggests a focus on the subject herself.
