"Beata Beatrix", one of the most recognized works by Pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, depicts Beatrice Portinari from the Italian poet Dante Alighieri's poem La Vita Nuova at the moment of her death. The painting's title in English translates to 'Blessed Beatrice'.

It has a hazy, transcendental quality, giving the sensation of a dream or vision, and is filled with symbolic references. Rosetti modeled Beatrice after his deceased wife and frequent model, Elizabeth Siddal. The symbolism in the painting of a red dove, a messenger of love, relates back to Rossetti's love for Siddal with the white poppy representing laudanum and the means of her death.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a British poet, illustrator, painter, translator and founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. His work influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Rosetti's art was characterised by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism.   Rossetti's personal life was closely linked to his work, especially his relationships with his models and muses Elizabeth Siddal (who was also his wife), Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris.
