“Therese Dreaming” is one of the most known and controversial paintings of Balthus, that features a pre-pubescent girl lost in her own thoughts while her cat (a signature element of Balthus’ paintings) is busy drinking milk next to her. Therese Blanchard, who was about twelve or thirteen at the time this picture was made, and her brother Hubert were neighbours of Balthus in Paris.

Balthus’ fixation with teenage girls resulted in both superb, absolutely anti-modernist artworks and accusations of paedophilia, throughout his entire career and after his death too.

Balthasar Klossowski de Rola, known as Balthus, was a Polish-French modern artist, known for his erotically-charged images of pubescent girls, but also for the refined, dreamlike quality of his imagery. Balthus's work demonstrates a commitment to classical painting while applying those techniques upon subject matter that reflects the concerns of the modern era in a highly restrained yet nonetheless often charged manner, revealing signs of sexuality, social transgression and anomie.
