"Mahabharata - Birth of Shakuntala" a very famous painting by the Indian master Raja Ravi Varma, depicts Maharishi Vishwamitra's refusal to take care of the newly born as Menaka holds out their child.

Shakuntala was born to sage Vishwamitra and the heavenly Apsara Menaka, and left in a forest near the Ashram of Rishi Kanva, who adopted her as his own. Vishwamitra was enraged to find out how he had been duped by Menaka and the Devas and he also felt ashamed of himself that he had lost all the virtue he had gained through his many years of penance and ascetism. He distanced himself from the mother and child and got back to his penance.
