About Sunayani Devi Bengal School Art Indian Painting
Sunayani Devi (1875–1962) was a pioneering Indian artist and one of the earliest modernist women painters in India. Born into the illustrious Tagore family in Calcutta, she was the niece of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and sister to renowned artists Abanindranath and Gaganendranath Tagore. Her distinctive style, characterized by simplicity, flowing lines, and vibrant colors, often depicted themes from Indian epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Influenced by Kalighat pat paintings, her work brought a fresh perspective to Indian art, emphasizing indigenous traditions over Western academic styles. Notable works include "Sadhika," "Ardhanarisvar," and "Milk Maids."
