Lowry received little public recognition until 1939, when he had his first solo show in London. In 1976, shortly after his death, the Royal Academy displayed his work in a retrospective exhibition that was extremely popular with the general public. Critical opinion remains divided over his stature, but the originality of his artistic vision and the relevance of his social commentary are generally agreed upon. Lowry used a drab palette—the gray buildings are often set against a hazy, white background—but he created powerful and subtle tonal relationships. The naive elements in his style are belied by strong compositions and skillful drawing.

He developed a unique approach to cityscapes, painting industrial structures such as factories, cotton mills, and stark residential buildings, in front of which crowds of small, sticklike figures go about their everyday activities.

Laurence Stephen Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. L. S. Lowry developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as "matchstick men". Lowry painted mysterious un-populated landscapes, brooding portraits and the unpublished "marionette" works, which were only found after his death.
