"Bottles and Knife" painted by Juan Gris, is a great example of Analytical Cubism from 1911 and a very early exploration of a style which was heavily culturally influenced by the early cubist work of Picasso and Braque. In ‘Bottles and Knife’, Gris shows reference to how the artists had begun to breakdown the basic rules of perspective to create images showing multiple view points and reducing objects to their geometric parts.

In this painting he produces a work which confuses the viewer by presenting us with a simplified version of reality, objects taken back to their most basic shapes. Gris developed a singular style within the Cubist movement, harmonizing colors rather than using monotones and creating pure, distinct forms, working often in collage.

José Victoriano González-Pérez (1887 – 1927), better known as Juan Gris, was a Spanish painter and sculptor born in Madrid who lived and worked in France most of his life. Closely connected to the innovative artistic genre Cubism, his works are among the movement's most distinctive.
