The spectrum of his works includes the themes and motifs customary in 19th-century Japanese woodcuts: depictions of scenes of everyday life, of nature and landscape, of special events, as well as of individuals, often graceful female figures. One of the highlights of his artistic practice is the publication of the series "The 53 Stations of the Tokaido". The series of 55 pages, created between the beginning of the 1830s and 1835, shows the landscapes and people typical of him in naturalistic depiction and elegant drawing and coloring. In color, form and balance of composition, they had a significant impact on late 19th-century European painting beyond Japan.
