Marc Chagall Paintings
Marc Chagall (1887 – 1985) was a Russian-French artist.

Chagall was considered as pioneer of modern art and one of its greatest figurative painters who invented a visual language that recorded the thrill and terror of the 20th century. For decades, he has been respected as the world's preeminent Jewish artist.

"When Matisse dies," Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, "Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is". View Artist Collection

About The Lion And The Hunter (La Fontaine's Fables) Marc Chagall
The young Pierre Matisse organized at the Barbazanges-Hodebert gallery, the first individual exhibition of Marc Chagall in France. In 1927, renowned art critic Maurice Raynal included Chagall in his laudatory monograph, Modern French Painters . Despite this favor and the recognition of his adopted country as an artist, Chagall remains torn between his Russian past and his French present. His projects at the time, executed for the merchant Ambroise Vollard, reflect this “identity crisis”. Witness the first illustrations created by the artist which were, in 1925, on the one hand for the novel by his compatriot Nikolai Gogol Dead Souls , and on the other hand, in 1926, for the Fables by the Frenchman Jean de La Fontaine, a great literary classic of the 17th century.
