This painting was of Sensō-ji. The oldest temple of Tokyo and one of the most significant pilgrimages of Japan. The Sensoji Kannon temple is dedicated to Kannon Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of compassion, and is the most widely visited spiritual site in the world with over 30 million visitors annually.
Koitsu was inspired by the new direction and began to create hauntingly beautiful scenes of Japan bathed in moonlight, sunsets and the changing seasons.

Tsuchiya Koitsu (1879-1949) was a master of the Shin Hanga movement, though his first prints were of the Sino Japanese war. Born in rural Japan, he started an apprentice as a wood block carver at the age of 15. He came the attention of the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika in whose house he lived and studied for 19 years.
