Houses on the River (The Old Town) painted in 1914, is a major landscape painting by Austrian Expressionist master Egon Schiele. The monumental canvas depicts a panoramic vista of Krumau nestled along the curved banks of the Vltava River. Painted shortly before the onset of World War I, Houses on the River showcases Schiele at the height of his mature landscape style. Egon Schiele (1890 – 1918) was an Austrian painter and a protégé of Gustav Klimt. Egon Schiele was the 'enfant terrible' of the Viennese avant-garde.   Schiele's Expressionist figurative works on themes like budding sexuality, death and decay scandalised early 20th-century Vienna. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele's paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism.   The Leopold Museum, Vienna houses Schiele's most important and complete collection of work.
