"The Loving Cup", by the Pre-Raphaelite and Romantic painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, is one of the representative works of Rossetti's maturity. Here, a beautiful young woman with richly braided long brown hair, and wrapped in a deep red robe, raises a golden cup, which gives the work its name.

The inscription on the frame, “Douce nuit et joyeux jour/A chevalier de bel amour”(“Sweet night and happy days./To the well-loved knight”), suggests she may be offering a toast to her lover on his way to war. Behind her are four brass plates depicting scenes from the Bible and ivy leaves symbolizing loyalty and eternity.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a British poet, illustrator, painter, translator and founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. His work influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Rosetti's art was characterised by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism.   Rossetti's personal life was closely linked to his work, especially his relationships with his models and muses Elizabeth Siddal (who was also his wife), Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris.
