Amrita Sher-Gil painted this image in 1936. Ever since her return to India after her art studies in Paris, she wanted to paint the ordinary rural people of India. And she kept experimenting with her visual language in order to distil the hopelessness of their lives.

Amrita Sher-Gil flashed through the Indian artistic horizon like an incandescent meteor. Her place in the trajectory of Indian modern art is unquestionably pre eminent. Her aesthetic sensibility shows not surprisingly a blend of European and Indian elements. Her command over handling of oil medium and use of colour, as well as her vigorous brushwork and strong feeling for composition, all go towards giving a dazzling quality to her genius.

Amrita Sher-Gil (1913 - 1941) was an eminent Indian painter born to a Punjabi Sikh father and a Hungarian Jewishmother. She's sometimes known as India's Frida KahloToday she is considered an important woman painter of 20th century India, whose legacy stands on par with that of the Masters of Bengal Renaissance. She is also the 'most expensive' woman painter of India.
