Thomas Daniell was an English landscape painter who also painted Orientalist themes. Thomas Daniel made his name with a series of prints and aquatints of views based on his travels in India in 1786–1794. Such ‘exotic’ Indian scenes became the stock-in-trade for Daniell for the rest of his career. View Artist Collection

About Kanheri Caves Salsette (near Bombay) Thomas Daniell Vintage Orientalist Paintings of India
The European shown sketching in this image may be James Wales (1747-1795), through whom the Daniells had come to know about many of the rock-cut temples of Western India. During his time in India, Wales had been making drawings and plans with the intention of publishing an illustrated work on the antiquities of India when he returned to England. However, on a visit to the Kanheri caves in 1795, Wales caught a fever from which he eventually died. The Daniells fulfilled some of his ambitions when they used his drawings as the basis of the last two parts of their series Oriental scenery. Archer op. cit.
