Clyfford Still

Clyfford Still (1904 - 1980) was an American painter associated with both the Abstract Expressionist and Color Field movements.

Clyfford is best known for his paintings that often feature craggy shapes; deep, dark hues; haunting, wiry shapes; and vertical “lifelines”. Clyford developed a technique of applying thick layers of paint onto the canvas using a palette knife, creating jagged flares of dark tones against lighter areas.

In 1944, Still moved to New York and began exhibiting alongside abstract painters such as Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Willem DeKooning. From this period onward, most of the artist’s works were titled with dates and numbers, as in his 1944–N No.2 (1944).

About 1948 Clyfford Still Abstract Expressionist Painting
The painting dispensed with typically “beautiful” colors in favor of more disquieting hues to create unsettling impressions. In 1948 Visceral smears of brown, mustard, and crimson impasto seem to spread beyond the canvas. The painting’s soaring scale and the energy of the roughly painted crags suggest the boundlessness the artist revered. Clyfford Still was an American painter associated with both the Abstract Expressionist and Color Field movements. He is best known for his paintings that resemble flame-like crevices or shapes. Inspired by the windswept landscape of the Canadian prairie, he developed a technique of applying thick layers of paint onto the canvas using a palette knife, creating jagged flares of dark tones against lighter areas of yellows, oranges, and reds.
