Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist painter born on the island of St Thomas. His importance resides in his contributions to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Pissarro studied from great forerunners, including Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. He later studied and worked alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac when he took on the Neo-Impressionist style at the age of 54. View Artist Collection

About The Seine at Bougival
Pissarro was the oldest of the Impressionists, and influences from the previous generation of artists, including Courbet and Millet, are more conspicuous in his work. This painting is one Pissarro produced before the Impressionists' first group exhibition, which was held in 1874. The rather heavy feel of the trees and hill on the right show signs of the influence of an older style.
