"The Elephant Celebes", also known in short as "Celebes" by the German Dadaist and surrealist Max Ernst, combines the vivid dreamlike atmosphere of Surrealism with the collage aspects of Dada. It is the most famous of Ernst's early surrealist works and "undoubtedly the first masterpiece of Surrealist painting." The central rotund shape in this painting derives from a photograph of a Sudanese corn-bin, which Ernst has transformed into a sinister mechanical monster. The painting’s inexplicable combinations, such as the headless female figure and the elephant-like creature, suggest images from a dream and the Freudian technique of free association.
