‘Landscape at Stanton Street’ consists of agitated black lines and ink spatters of varying density. The free, gestural brushstrokes are typical of de Kooning's style was made in the only period of sustained printmaking in his career. The title refers to a street in the Lower East Side of New York with which de Kooning is probably familiar, although the compiler has been unable to confirm the artist's reasons for choosing this title or subject. Landscape has been a recurring theme in de Kooning's output. However, in common with many of his works of the 1970s, does not represent the subject in a naturalistic manner; it could be described as an emotional response to a specific location.
