About Kurma The Second Incarnation Of Vishnu C 1790 Indian School Indian Miniature Painting
This painting depicts a well-known episode from Hindu mythology known as the samudra manthan or 'Churning of the Ocean of Milk'. Indra, the king of the gods came across the Sage Durvasa who offered him a special garland given to him by the god Shiva. Indra accepted the garland and placed it on the trunk of his elephant, but the elephant trampled it on the ground. Taking the form of the turtle Kurma, Vishnu was able to carry the mountain on his back as the ocean of milk was churned. A number of things were produced from the ocean and were divided between gods and the demons.
