About Jagannath Entrance E. Therond From 'Le Tour du Monde' 1869 Vintage Illustration Art Of India
Door to the Jagannath temple, Puri, India, drawing by Emile Therond (1821-?) from Alfred Grandidier's photo album, from Travels in the southern provinces of India by Alfred Grandidier (1836-1921), 1862-1864, from Il Giro del mondo (World Tour), Journal of geography, travel and costumes, Volume II, No 17, April 22, 1869. The Jagannath temple in the city of Puri is one of the great Hindu pilgrimage places. It enshrines the wooden icon of Jagannath (Lord of the Universe), a deity associated with Vishnu and Krishna, worshipped along with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. The ten avatars of Vishnu stand above the temple tower housed in petal shaped niches. On the left is an episode from the story of the journey to Kanchi with Jagannath (on the white horse) and Balabhadra. On the right is a scene from the Rāmāyana with the army of monkeys, Hanumān, Rāma, Lakṣmaṇa and Rāvaṇa. Jagannath, Subhadra and Balabhadra appear several times in various ceremonial clothes.
