Edvard Munch Paintings

Edvard Munch (1863 – 1944)  was a Norwegian painter who played a great role in late 19th-century Symbolism.

The paintings he made focused on the internal view of the objects, as he believed that art should reflect an emotion or idea rather than represent the natural world in the objective. Munch explored the themes of love, fear, death, melancholia and anxiety via his paintings.

About Bathing Man – Edvard Munch Painting
The Bathing Man is a exquisite painting by a Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. In this painting we see a virile, muscular, naked man emerging from the cool, turquoise sea after a swim. The picture can be read as a reflection of the period’s “vitalism” – a world view that assumed all living things to be suffused with a magical life force. This philosophy found its pictorial expression in particular in dynamic motifs of naked men and youths. As a cultural phenomenon, vitalism was a reaction against the decadence of the period, and against industrialism, with the great cities and ways of life it brought with it. Instead of cool-headed rationalism and scientific technology, vitalism preferred to emphasise instinct and intuition – and believed the key to a better life lay in nature and good health. The sheer beauty this work ranks high in Munch's oeuvre. As a static tableau of the mind, it shows the influence of the French synthetist painters. But its looses contours, sometimes doubled, rich somber colors, and lack of primitivist stylization give it a life and atmosphere rarely found in their work.
